Emergence of Onchocerca volvulus from skin mimicking Dracunculiasis medinensis.
We describe 11 cases of suspected Dracunculus medinensis infection in which the worm recovered was identified as Onchocerca volvulus. Identification was based on morphology of the examined specimen.
متن کاملScanning Electron Microscopy of Onchocerca volvulus Microfilariae from Guatemala
Microfilariae of Onchocerca volvulus from Guatemala were examined by scanning electron microscope. There are numerous transverse striations on the cuticular surface. The number of annulations varies from 325 to 357. The anterior end forms a round cephalic cap which bears a V-shaped hook. Two small openings are present on the cephalic cap. They are probably the openings of one of the amphidial c...
متن کاملThe mitogenome of Onchocerca volvulus from the Brazilian Amazonia focus
We report here the first complete mitochondria genome of Onchocerca volvulus from a focus outside of Africa. An O. volvulus mitogenome from the Brazilian Amazonia focus was obtained using a combination of high-throughput and Sanger sequencing technologies. Comparisons made between this mitochondrial genome and publicly available mitochondrial sequences identified 46 variant nucleotide positions...
متن کاملMolecular cloning of adenylate kinase from the human filarial parasite Onchocerca volvulus
Adenylate kinases (ADK) are ubiquitous enzymes that contribute to the homeostasis of adeninenucleotides in living cells. In this study, the cloning of a cDNA encoding an adenylate kinase from the filariaOnchocerca volvulus has been described. Using PCR technique, a 281 bp cDNA fragment encoding part ofan adenylate kinase was isolated from an O. volvulus cDNA library. Use of this fragment as a p...
متن کاملMolecular cloning of an immunodominant antigen of Onchocerca volvulus
We have cloned and characterized the gene for an immunodominant antigen of O. volvulus that is recognized by the sera of 96% of patients with onchocerciasis. Its 1.2-kb mRNA constitutes 0.3% of adult worm poly(A)+ RNA and its cDNA sequence reveals that it is not a highly conserved structural protein such as actin or tubulin. Similar but not identical genes occur in the genomes of related filari...
